Local Government Boundaries
Background The Local Government (Boundaries) Act (Northern Ireland) 2008 provided for:
- the establishment of 11 local government districts
- the division of these districts into wards
- the appointment of a Local Government Boundaries Commissioner to recommend the names of these districts and wards and the number of wards in each district
The then Minister of the Environment, Sammy Wilson, appointed Richard H Mackenzie CB as the Local Government Boundaries Commissioner. The Commissioner commenced this work on 01 July 2008 and was tasked with submitting his final recommendations to the Department of the Environment (DOE) by 30 June 2009.
Final Recommendations The Commissioner submitted his Final Recommendations Report to the Department on Monday 22 June 2009. This Report can be viewed on the Commissioner’s website.
Next Steps The Environment Minister will carefully consider the recommendations in the Report before bringing it to colleagues in the Executive in the autumn.
Subject to the Executive's agreement, the Report will go to the Assembly, along with a draft Order. This will result in the Commissioner's recommendations being brought forward, with or without modifications.
