Accounts and Audit

Councils are legally required to prepare annual accounts to show their financial transactions.  Councils’ accounts are audited by the Local Government Audit Office Auditors, who are appointed by the Department of the Environment, have power to reject expenditure which is considered not to have been lawfully incurred and to surcharge that expenditure upon councillors or officers whom the auditor considers responsible for authorising such expenditure.
