Information
District councils can make and enforce bye-laws, subject to confirmation from the appropriate local government Department. This is according to Part VI of the Local Government Act (Northern Ireland) 1972, which can be accessed through the link below to the UK Statute Law website.

Local Government Policy Division
Local Government Policy Division (LGPD) handles bye-laws for council districts in relation to the following areas:

  • good rule and government of the district
  • prevention and suppression of nuisances
  • public parks
  • recreation grounds
  • promenades
  • seashores (subject to additional consents)
