Transition Committees

Transition Committees

There are 11 voluntary Transition Committees, one for each of the proposed new councils. These Committees will plan and prepare key activities to make sure there are 11 effective councils in place for the changeover.

Key responsibilities of voluntary Transition Committees include:

  • agreeing the arrangements for the change; including appointing key change management staff
  • developing a Communications Strategy for efficient discussions which will successfully relay the decisions made
  • establishing the priorities of the existing councils and the functions moving to the new councils
  • recommending how the existing systems and activities will move forward
  • conducting an audit of current properties, grounds and assets

Each Committee is made up of elected members from the district councils which will form the new councils. The Committees, in turn, are supported by Transition Management Teams (TMTs).

Guidance for Transition Committees
Local Government Policy Division provides guidance notes for Transition Committees to assist with the steps required for the implementation of local government reform.

Ministerial visits

Environment Minister Edwin Poots has embarked on a series of visits to the 11 Transition Committees throughout Northern Ireland.

Information on each of the visits will be made available as they take place.
