Local Government Reform Taskforce
In March 2006 the Department of the Environment (DoE) established the Local Government Reform Taskforce in response to the local government modernisation and reform programme.
During the initial phase the Taskforce comprised of a Political Panel and Working Group to provide strategic leadership. Nine subgroups were also established to bring forward policy proposals to inform legislation and identify key implementation tasks.
By the end of June 2006 the nine subgroups compiled their reports and submitted their recommendations to the Political Panel and Working Group.
In August 2006, the Taskforce, which was entering the implementation stage, commissioned the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) to carry out a review of its structure to ensure it was fit for purpose.
