Photo Competition on Climate Change

Enter our schools photo competition and you could win a visit for you and your class to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The European Parliament Office in Ireland, supported by the Irish Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, and the Department of the Environment, Northern Ireland (DOE NI) is offering secondary schools the opportunity to win a visit to Strasbourg to take part in the European Parliament's Euroscola programme for schools. Students are invited to submit up to 3 digital photos each on any aspect of the following theme:

'Climate change and my area:  causes/impact/solutions'.

The competition is being run on a cross border basis with a winning school from Northern Ireland and a winning school from the Republic of Ireland. In Northern Ireland, it is open to students aged 16-18 in A-level years. The closing date is 31 October 2007.

Rules and Guidelines

  • This competition is organised by the European Parliament Information Office in Ireland, and is co-sponsored by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in the Republic of Ireland and the Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland.

  • The competition is open to students aged 16-18 (senior cycle/A-level) from secondary schools in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

  • Students are asked to submit digital photographs on any aspect of the theme 'Climate change and my area:  causes/impact/solutions'.  

  • Each photo submitted must be accompanied by a short explanatory caption (approximately 50-60 words), detailing where and when the photo was taken, what it depicts, and its relationship to the subject of the competition.

  • The organisers may subsequently request higher resolution versions of the winning images, to enable re-production in print or on-line materials.

  • Digital editing is limited to cropping, resizing, contrast adjustment and sharpening.

Specifications

  • Up to 3 photos may be submitted by each individual entrant.
  • Photos must be the individual work of the named entrant and must not have been previously published.
  • Photos should be submitted in high resolution jpeg format.
  • The size of each photograph entered must be 2,400 x 3,000 pixels or 1.5 and 2MB.
  • Photos should be submitted by post, on a CD

Judging panel

The quality of the photograph, relevance of the subject and creativity/originality will be examined in conjunction with artistic merit. The decision of the judging panel will be final.

Prize-winners

The prizes are as follows:

  • The best entrant from the Republic of Ireland will win a fully-funded visit for his/her class (up to 30 students and 3 teachers) to the European Parliament in Strasbourg to take part in the Euroscola programme.

  • The best entrant from Northern Ireland will win a fully-funded visit for his/her class (up to 30 students and 3 teachers) to the European Parliament in Strasbourg to take part in the Euroscola programme.

  • In addition, three runners-up from the Republic of Ireland will each win a subsidised visit for 10 students and 1 teacher from their school to the European Parliament in Strasbourg to take part in the Euroscola programme.

The visits to the European Parliament in Strasbourg will take place in February or March 2008, on a date subject to discussion between the European Parliament Office and the schools concerned.

Winners will be notified in writing via their schools no later than 30 November 2007.

Subsequent use of photographs

Winning photos will be displayed on the website of the European Parliament Office, in the offices of the European Parliament and European Commission in Dublin and the DOE NI website.

The European Parliament Office in Ireland and DOE NI reserves the right to use submitted photos, without restriction, for display and promotion purposes, and in its printed and online publications and information material.
