National research on air quality is co-ordinated through a number of UK-wide programmes managed through the air pollution research programme of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Opens in a new window. .

The Expert Panel on Air Quality Standards (EPAQS) Opens in a new window. has been merged into the Department of Health’s Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants (COMEAP) Opens in a new window.. Defra, the Devolved Administration and the Department of Health believe the joining of the two expert groups is the most efficient and sustainable way for the UK government to maintain access to independent advice on air quality standards.
