BiodiversityBiodiversity (or biological diversity) encompasses the whole variety of life on Earth. It includes, not only, all species of plants and animals, but also their genetic variation, and the complex ecosystems of which they are part. It is not restricted to rare or threatened species but includes the whole of the natural world from the commonplace to the critically endangered. Our biodiversity is under threat in Northern Ireland as much as in any other part of the world. The Natural Heritage Unit, within Planning and Environmental Policy Group (PEPG), is responsible for the preparation of policy and legislation for the protection of our biodiversity (natural heritage) and The Department of the Environment takes the lead in working towards the aims and objectives as stated in the Northern Ireland Biodiversity Strategy - a set of goals designed to protect and enhance biodiversity in Northern Ireland over the period up to 2016. PEPG is supported in this cross-cutting strategy by the Northern Ireland Inter-Departmental Biodiversity Group. It also works closely with the Northern Ireland Biodiversity Group (NIBG) - an independent organisation which is tasked with co-ordinating and monitoring the implementation of the Northern Ireland Biodiversity Strategy. In 2001 EU Heads of State agreed to 'Halt the decline of biodiversity loss [in the EU] by 2010'. This commitment has been reinforced by a recent Communication from the Commission 'Halting the Biodiversity Loss by 2010 - and Beyond'. PEPG will engage with the NI Departments to encourage them to develop implementation plans which will contribute to the targets as stated in the EU Communication.
