Managing Radioactive Waste Safely - A Framework for Geological Disposal

The long term management of radioactive waste is the subject of a joint consultation issued by the Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland, the UK Government and the and Welsh Assembly Government.

The consultation paper, “Managing Radioactive Waste Safely: a Framework for Implementing Geological Disposal”, (783kb) was promised in the Department’s response to the report of the independent Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) published in October 2006.

We welcome your views and comments on the proposals. Specific questions are included throughout the document and are summarised in Chapter 7. Officials will be happy to answer questions or attend events or meetings wherever possible over the consultation period.

In line with the Department of the Environment’s policy of openness, which is shared by Defra, at the end of the consultation period copies of the responses we receive will be made publicly available through the Defra Information Resource Centre, Lower Ground Floor, Ergon House, 17 Smith Square, London SW1P 3JR. The information they contain will also be published in a summary of responses.
