| Registration summary | Businesses that place batteries on the UK market are obligated producers. There are different requirements and obligations depending on whether the batteries are portable, industrial or automotive. NIEA is responsible for the producer responsibility system for portable batteries. The UK Department for Business is responsible for industrial and automotive batteries. |

| Eligibility Criteria | Producers are manufacturers, re-branders or importers who place portable batteries on the UK market. There is no minimum threshold in the regulations – all producers must register. However, only large producers (> 1 tonne per year) have obligations for the collection, treatment and recovery of waste portable batteries. Large producers must join a Battery Compliance Scheme. |
