Licence summary

Our wildlife team are responsible for the implementation of the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985Opens in New window as amended by the Wildlife (Amendment) (NI) Order 1995Opens in New window and aspects of Conservation (Natural Habitats etc.) Regulations (NI) 1995Opens in New window (as amended).  

The Wildlife (NI) Order 1985 (as amended) is equivalent to Part I of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 in England and Wales and the Wildlife Act 1976 as amended by the Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2000 in the Republic of Ireland.

This order gives us the power to issue licences to permit otherwise prohibited action to be taken to resolve problems where there is no other satisfactory solution.

The licensing system safeguards the conservation and welfare of wild animals but provides a way to allow action to be taken when necessary.

Eligibility Criteria If you have any previous convictions under the wildlife order you must notify us (use the contact details below).
Regulation Summary The Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985Opens in New window (as amended) gives the Department the authority to issue licences to undertake certain otherwise prohibited actions.
Application Evaluation Process Each application is assessed by our Wildlife team. If the license is granted, specific conditions will be attached regarding species, dates, location and required reports.
Will Tacit Consent Apply? No. It is in the public interest that the authority must process your application before it can be granted. Please contact us using the details below, if you have not heard within a reasonable period.
Target Completion Period 15 working days.
Fees

BPL - To hold a captive bred bird of prey £10.00
BPC - To breed birds of prey in captivity £50.00
VRO - To hold wild birds for aviculture £10.00
XYO - To sell dead wild birds and animals (taxidermy) £50.00

All other licences are free.

(a) applications for consent
(b) consent issued and conditions imposed
(c) analysis results for all samples of effluent collected to assess consent compliance
(d) information derived from the results and steps taken in consequence, including any enforcement actions
