Practical Implementation of Freshwater Pearl Mussel Measures

Last updated: 17 August 2011

Project Promoter: Donegal County Council
Project Number: INTERREG IVA 3705

To support the restoration of the freshwater pearl mussel to favourable conservation status at designated sites in the eligible area.

The project proposes to undertake a programme of works involving the practical implementation of measures to support the restoration of the freshwater pearl mussel (FPM) to favourable conservation status at designated sites. Conservation objectives have been set for these sites in Northern Ireland by NIEA and in Ireland by NPWS.  Measures to achieve these objectives are to be trialled in pilot catchments and their efficacy established through monitoring to inform the application of the most effective suite of relevant measures in other FPM catchments. Based on these trials it is also proposed to develop detailed technical guidelines to support agencies with a role in implementing measures relevant to the FPM and managing activities in FPM catchments.

The project will receive up to £2,321,244.00 in grant assistance.
