Get Involved - Celebrate World Environment Day on June 5th!

For the second year, the Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) are co-ordinating Northern Ireland 's campaign to celebrate the United Nation's World Environment Day.

The Northern Ireland campaign, The People Pledge', encourages us to make simple behaviour changes such as re-using plastic bags or turning off the tap when cleaning your teeth and, in return, pledgers will receive an energy-efficient lightbulb, courtesy of NIE's environmentally friendly electricity, Eco Energy. Stephen McCully, Managing Director NIE Supply said: We're more than happy to be supporting World Environment Day. It's all about everyone doing their bit to help the environment.

Of course, NIE customers can do their bit to support renewable energy by opting for NIE's Eco Energy, which is electricity generated from wind power and is the same price as regular electricity.

To become an Eco Energy customer, you can either telephone NIE on 08457 455 455 or visit www.nieenergy.co.uk .

EHS spokesperson, Celine Rodgers said, Our target for 2005, is to get 1% of the Northern Ireland population to sign up to 1 of the 5 simple environmental pledges. The pledges are easy to do and will have a direct result on the local environment.

If you would like to get involved in World Environment Day, either by making a pledge, or if you'd like further information on getting staff in your organisation to take part, email worldenvironmentday@doeni.gov.uk or phone 028 9054 6754.

Schools are also encouraged to get involved, with children's pledges available, and fabulous bright stickers featuring the Pledge characters as their gift.

Further information, and online pledging, will be available on this website from 1st June.

Pledging will also be available at a number of locations and events throughout Northern Ireland , including Belfast City Council's Waste Fair at City Hall on 3rd and 4th June.
