The average dose rates in air over intertidal sediments in the British Isles due to natural radioactivity are:
Sand 0.03 to 0.05 micrograys per hour (uGy/hr)
Mud 0.05 to 0.10 micrograys per hour (uGy/hr)
Newcastle is an area which has granite sub layers and as such readings of up to 0.28 uGy/hr can be readily obtained inland from the coastline.
