Power Station Emissions
Power Station emissions
Fossil fuel fired power stations can emit significant quantities of acid forming gases, particularly sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen. Emissions of these gases from the Northern Ireland power stations have fallen substantially in recent years. The conversion of Premier Power's Ballylumford power station to gas has been a major factor in reducing emissions of sulphur dioxide. At Ballylumford and Kilroot, boilers have been upgraded by the installation of 'low NOx burners' which have led to a reduction in the quantity of oxides of nitrogen emitted.
