Red Grouse Species Action Plan Delivery Group
In 2009, The Group was established to advise on the effective delivery of the Northern Ireland Red Grouse Species Action Plan and to encourage implementation of the identified actions with the plan and ensure effective outcomes.
The Group engages with other individuals and bodies responsible for development and delivery of the various strands of the NI Biodiversity Strategy and facilitates effective communication between the relevant government agencies, the private and the voluntary sectors.
The main objective of the Red Grouse Species Action Plan Delivery Group
- Is to co-ordinate action required by the Red Grouse Species Action Plan
The remit of the Red Grouse Species Action Plan Delivery Group includes:
- Establishment, delivery and review of a Red Grouse Species Action Plan Work Programme
- The co-ordination of arrangements for monitoring and reporting on red grouse in the context of the Action Plan and relevant policies
- The coordination of activity on red grouse conservation
- Ensuring that relevant activity is identified
- Providing guidance for landowners
- Liaison with red grouse conservation interests in the Republic of Ireland and UK
- Interpretation, education and knowledge sharing
- Consideration will also be given by the Group to relevant actions and issues arising from other Species Action Plans
- Consideration will also be given by the Group to relevant Habitat Action Plans
- Identification and support of research needs
- Co-ordinating the provision of red grouse conservation advice to government
The main objectives of the Red Grouse Species Action Plan are:
- Maintain the total population of the red grouse at 202 pairs
- Maintain the population of red grouse considered to be ‘hibernicus’ at 50 pairs in Counties Fermanagh and Tyrone
- Maintain the overall range of red grouse at 46X10km2
- By 2015, increase the overall population of red grouse in Northern Ireland to 300 pairs
- By 2015, increase the overall range of red grouse to 50X10km2
- By 2015, increase the population of ‘hibernicus’ red grouse in counties Fermanagh and Tyrone to 75 pairs
