The area is of special scientific interest because of the diversity of habitats and plant communities present. The canopy varies from predominantly hazel to a more mature woodland with ash, birch and oak. There are several specimens of the locally rare bird cherry and other scarce species include hay - scented buckler fern.
The site runs along the lower, southern flank of Longmore Top hill extending out on the valley bottom of Cleggan River.
The lower hill slope is covered by an ash/hazel woodland with a variety of semi-natural species rich grassland above and below ranging from acidic to calcareous and including pockets of fen meadow.
