picture of a hazel wood © Robert ThompsonThe site is of special scientific interest as it is the largest area of undisturbed semi-natural woodland on the basalt escarpment of County Antrim.
Also streams, waterfalls, scree slopes and cliffs and scarce plant species.
The site extends along part of steep basalt escarpment of Glenarriff Glen below Crochalough.
It includes a length of cliff and adjoining pockets of scree, some calcareous grassland on the upper slopes and the largest remaining undisturbed stand of ash/hazel woodland in Antrim.
