Internationally important type site for the interpretation of the mineralogies associated with the thermomorphic conversion of laterite and lithomarge to porcellanite. A range of rare minerals has been recorded.

Notable wet grassland species present are pale butterwort and lesser clubmoss. It is also a site for breeding peregrine falcon.
