Killard Point is of special scientific interest because of the physiography, flora and fauna. It is one of the best examples of a coastal system in Northern Ireland, and is notable for its extent and the wide range of plant communities present.
In addition it is largely unmodified and there are a number of rare plants and animals recorded. 
Killard Point is considered to be one of the best sites in Northern Ireland (N.I.) for grassland and dune heath invertebrates.
Unimproved grasslands are a rare habitat in N. I. and the best sites tend to be on coastal sites like Killard which have free-draining soils and a favourable climate.
The butterflies and moths of Killard have been documented and are known to be of high interest.
Beetles of dry habitats are also well-represented here.
