Internationally important rock series supporting obducted accretionary prism model for closure of the Iapetus Ocean in Lower Palaeozoic times. The intertidal exhibits the classic algal zonation. The lower shore is particularly rich in red algae which form a dense understorey beneath the wracks and kelps.
A number of notable maritime vegetation communities occur. Seventeen rare plant species have been recorded.
Internationally significant populations of light bellied Brent geese, turnstone and ringed plover.
Nationally important populations of 11 other species of bird. The invertebrate shore fauna is rich for an open coast area.
