picture of marsh marigoldsThe area was designated due to the wide range of grassland flora and fauna it supports.
Lergan slopes north to south with the southern bottom of the field quite flat and wet. The top part of the field is of a drier rush pasture grassland type, and is quite grassy. The field is more or less bisected by what appears to be an old field boundary. Here flushing occurs and locally very species-rich stands of vegetation are seen. This is where any of the orchids, such as lesser butterfly and heath spotted along with common twayblade are seen and where small stands of purple moor grass and marsh hawk's - beard vegetation occur. Locally pale sedge is quite abundant.
