Pettigoe plateau is the largest one of the expanses of blanket bog in Northern Ireland. The area exhibits the full range of structural and vegetation feature associated with this habitat. These features include pool complexes, acid flushes and basin mires. The bog vegetation is characterised by luxuriant Sphagnum mosses, dwarf shrubs, abundant purple moor grass and frequent bog myrtle.
picture of a hen harrier in flight over the plateauThe plateau is the second most important breeding site for golden plover in Northern Ireland, as well as being one of a few upland breeding sites for dunlin in Northern Ireland. Other breeding waders include lapwing, curlew, and snipe. While hen harrier and common tern also breed in the area.
