Black Lough is a small lake near Aughnacloy in County Tyrone. It is an important site because of its diverse fen flora.

picture of a male Irish damselflyThe open water of the lake contains floating aquatic plants such as yellow water-lily and broad-leaved pondweed. The lake is surrounded by a band of swamp which supports a range of wetland plants including water horsetail, bottle sedge and bogbean.
Behind the swamp is a band of fen vegetation. This is dominated by sedges, rushes and mosses, along with flowering plants such as marsh cinquefoil, marsh violet and marsh bedstraw.

A wide range of other semi-natural habitats add to the conservation value of the site. These include wet heath, neutral grassland, acid grassland, carr and scrub.

The sites invertebrate assemblage is of particular importance. It contains a number of rare species including the rare Irish damselfly.
