A large area of blanket bog in the Essan Valley. The hydrology is still intact and the vegetation shows clear affinities to oceanic blanket bog.
Notable features include several raised bog domes with hummock and lawn complexes and well developed pool systems of which Mullyfamore Forest Nature Reserve is the best example.
Associated habitats include cutover bog and extensive flushed slopes dominated by purple moor-grass.
Notable species include the oblong-leaved sundew and the hummock forming mosses Sphagnum imbricatum and Sphagnum fuscum. The bog also provides habitat for upland birds, with the Greenland white-fronted goose being of particular note.
