Lough Na Blaney Bane is of special scientific interest for its wetland flora and fauna.
Good quality fen, swamp and freshwater communities occur and additional diversity is provided by wet heath, scrub and woodland.

In addition the invertebrate community is important for its overall diversity and includes species which have restricted distribution within the United Kingdom.
The lough itself is mesotrophic (lakes which are commonly clear water with beds of submerged aquatic plants and medium levels of nutrients) and contains a range of aquatic palnts including white water lily and others such as perfoliate pondweed, various - leaved pondweed and long - stalked pondweed in submerged beds with broad - leaved pondweed and unbranched bur - reeds forming floating rafts on the surface.
