The area is of special scientific interest because it contains one of the finest raised bog pool systems in Northern Ireland, with the pools arranged concentrically around the site of an old bog burst. 
Parts of the bog surface have well developed hummocks and hollows, including frequent hummocks of Sphagnum imbricatum, Sphagnum fuscum and Racomitrium lanuginosum.
