Killough Bay encompasses the inter-tidal areas, and additional adjoining areas of notable habitat.
These include mudflats, sand dominated beaches, gravel and cobble units and rocky shore.
The principal interest is the wintering population of light-bellied Brent goose. The boundary of the Killough Bay Special Protection Area includes Killough Harbour and Coney Island Bay.

The site qualifies under Article 4.2 of the Directive (79/409/EEC) by supporting internationally important populations of light-bellied Brent goose.
