Biodiversity and Landscape
Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) research of relevance to our natural heritage is guided by the
Natural Heritage Research and Development Strategy (2004 – 2009)
.
NIEA staff carry out much of the work in this area but a significant amout of research is provided through external arrangements. An example of this is the Natural Heritage Research Partnership (NHRP), which is delivered by the Quercus research centre
in Queen’s University Belfast. Quercus is Northern Ireland’s research centre for biodiversity and conservation biology.
The aim of the NHRP is "To provide high quality research to underpin decisions relating to NIEA Natural Heritage’s statutory duties and to help deliver strategic targets relating to the Government’s key themes of sustainable development, biodiversity and climate change".
NIEA funds the Centre for Environmental Data and Recording (CEDaR) at the Ulster Museum. CEDaR aims to collect, store and disseminate information on the distribution of flora and fauna and geological sites within Northern Ireland and its coastal waters.
