The aquatic environment is especially sensitive to pesticides.

Pesticides have been detected above the drinking water regulatory standard. A number of those detected are some of the most commonly used herbicides.

Appropriate measures must be taken to avoid the pollution of surface water and groundwater. Such measures may include the establishment of buffer and safeguard zones or planting hedges along surface waters. This will reduce exposure of water bodies to spray drift, drain flow and run-off.

Who is responsible for the use of pesticides?

All users, including private and commercial operators, must use pesticides correctly regardless of type and quantity of application.
