Packaging Waste Producers

Last updated: 4 June 2009

The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations Northern Ireland 2007 (and amendments) require producers to recover and recycle packaging waste.

Packaging is defined as any product made of material used for the containment, protection, handling, delivery, or presentation of goods and is normally made from glass, aluminium, steel, paper/fibreboard, plastic or wood.

If you have a turnover of more than £2 million and handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging you may be required to register with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.
