How do I know if my waste is hazardous?

Together with the Environment Agency and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, we have produced a detailed technical document called 'WM2, Hazardous Waste: Interpretation of the definition and classification of hazardous waste'. The latest Version 2.3 takes into account the changes that have been brought in by the revised European Waste Framework Directive. The document can be viewed through the link below:

Hazardous Waste streams

Hazardous Waste streams include:

PCBs are recognised as a threat to the environment due to their toxicity, persistence and tendency to build up in the bodies of animals. See our section on Registration and Disposal of PCBs.

Further information on the types of hazardous waste and how the consignment note system operates can be found below.

Consignment Note System

We administer and control a consignment note system. A standard coding system has been introduced whereby a consignment note must have a unique code for that particular movement of hazardous waste. This must be bought from us.

We have produced 2 guidance documents to help explain how to use consignment notes.

  1. Guide to Consigning Hazardous Waste (.PDF 298Kb)Opens in new window.
  2. Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 and how they affect you (.PDF 380Kb)Opens in new window.

Pre-notification may now be carried out via e-mail. Our e-mail address is hazwaste@doeni.gov.uk.

Fees

Fees allow us to meet the cost of supervising hazardous waste movements. The fees vary depending on the type of movement involved, either £24, £10, or in certain cases, the codes will be given out free of charge.

One of the features of the consignment note is the need in Part B to enter the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC 2007) code for the process giving rise to the waste.

You can have a look at SIC Codes 2007 (.PDF 945Kb)Opens in new window. and you will find more information on UK SIC (2007) hereOpens in new window..

Other regulation requirements

The regulations include restrictions on the mixing of wastes, revised requirements for record keeping, periodic inspections of waste producers' facilities by our staff and fixed penalty notices for certain offences.
