Paragraph 17 Storage of Wastes for the Purposes of Recovery or Reuse

A guide to the legislation is given below. Read through this to help you decide if this exemption covers the type of activity that you wish to undertake.

Exempted Activity

Paragraph 17 allows the secure storage of particular waste types where the waste is to be reused, or used for the purposes of an activity described in Paragraph 12 of the Waste Management Licensing Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003 or, for any other recovery operation.

Waste articles which are to be used for construction work, and can be so used in their existing state

  100 tonnes

Solvents

5 cubic metres

Refrigerants and halons

   18 tonnes

Tyres

250 tyres

Waste mammalian protein

 100 tonnes

Waste mammalian tallow

 100 tonnes

Quantity

The total quantity of waste to be stored at any one time must not exceed the maximum total quantities stated in Table 7 of Schedule 2, Part 1 of the Waste Management Licensing Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003 (as reproduced above).

Storage

Each kind of waste must be stored separately. The waste can be stored for no more than 12 months.

Location

Storage must be in a secure place and can be on any premises.

Additional Conditions

The stored waste must be recovered or reused by an activity described in Paragraph 12 of the Regulations, or in any other recovery operation.
