Drinking water consumer information
The Drinking Water Inspectorate is responsible for:
- Regulating drinking water quality in Northern Ireland for public and private supplies.
- Assessing drinking water quality against regulatory standards.
- Carrying out detailed inspections of water sampling and assessing water treatment, distribution policies and practices.
- Publishing an annual report containing an overview of drinking water quality in Northern Ireland.
- Developing policy and regulation on drinking water issues, in association with other UK Drinking Water Regulators.
It also provides information for the general public in order to educate the public about water related issues in Northern Ireland at the moment.
1 April 2011 - Advice on levels of radioactivity
Following explosions and fires at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan as a result of the earthquake on 11th March 2011, there has been a release of radioactivity, some of which has since been detected in the UK.
The attached link to the Health Protection Agency's website answers some questions in relation to the safety of drinking water.
Drinking water supplies in the UK are considered safe following the incident. The Drinking Water Inspectorate will continue to monitor the situation.
