Theatre in Education

The Department of Environment Road Safety Education Officer Service has promoted essential road safety messages through Theatre in Education for many years.
Theater in Education - Road Safety

What Is Theatre In Education (TIE)?

  • can make road safety education more fun.;
  • it is a powerful medium for communicating road safety messages;
  • offers a "safe" environment in which young people can take responsibility for their actions and test future possibilities;
  • enables young people to explore their social and personal responses to sensitive issues in a way that a classroom discussion does not;
  • gives young people the opportunity to engage with the emotional aspects of road safety.
These messages are delivered in a fun, exciting and highly memorable way. Road safety performances take place in either primary or post-primary schools and are performed by experienced and professional actors demonstrating high quality drama at its best! Each year schools are selected by the appropriate Road Safety Education Officer to host one of the productions which, due to the cost, are provided on a limited basis.
At primary level - Children will be educated by the highly imaginative story lines and spectacular characters! They will learn about pedestrian safety, cycle safety and the many dangers on our roads today. Material, including worksheets, is left in the school to allow follow-up work to be done by teachers with the children – further enforcing the messages presented.
At post-primary level – There is a play aimed at the 11- 13 year old age group, who continue to be at risk on our roads. At this age young people have moved to secondary education and usually have to travel further. They have more freedom and independence than their primary counterparts, but with this comes added danger and risk. This makes this production much more pertinent, and the performance is a first for this age group.
For the over-sixteen's – There are plays that are aimed at young drivers. They are hard hitting performances that demonstrate the devastating consequences of speeding and unsafe driving. Young people will be moved, entertained and challenged to consider their own attitudes to driving and road safety in general.
